What does a government grant mean?
Government grant plays a vital role in the development of a community or society.
A government grant is a financial award given by a federal, state, or local government authority for a beneficial project. It is effectively a transfer payment. A grant does not include technical assistance or other financial assistance, such as a loan or loan guarantee, an interest rate subsidy, direct appropriation, or revenue sharing.
The grantee is not expected to repay the money but is expected to use the funds from the grant for their stated purpose, which typically serves some larger good.
Before you consider accessing grant from any Organizations you need to consider the advantages and disadvantages of that grant and that would lead us into the Pros and Cons of grant as stated below.
Grant Advantages
- The money is like a gift, i.e., you will not have to pay it back. In some cases, students who do not attend the minimum number of lessons or abandon a course might have to pay back the money.
- You will not lose any control over your company or organization. You will not, for example, have to sell company shares and subsequently lose some ownership of your business.
- In most cases, your credit history will not affect your submission’s chances of success.
Grant Disadvantages
- You need to find one that suits your specific needs – this might not be easy.
- Many people, companies, and organisations apply for grants, i.e., competition is fierce.
- Grants do not usually cover the whole cost of a project. Therefore, you will need to use your own money to fund some of it.
- Grants are not generally awarded for projects that have already begun. Therefore, if your project is already underway, mightn’t you be better off trying to find an investor or lender?
